Shopify makes Pakistani merchants pay twice. Cart Line doesn’t.
Shopify Payments isn’t available in Pakistan, so you pay a third-party gateway 3-5% plus Shopify’s 2% / 1% / 0.6% platform surcharge on top. Cart Line’s local rails — JazzCash, EasyPaisa, Raast — ARE the native rail. No surcharge.
Shopify is an excellent global platform — and for a merchant selling across borders at scale, its ecosystem and checkout maturity are hard to beat. This page is narrower than that: it is about what happens to a Pakistani SMB specifically, where Shopify Payments is unavailable, billing is in USD, and the real cost only shows up after launch. We name where Shopify still wins, too — credibility matters more than a clean sweep.
The line-by-line, for a Pakistani store
Strongest wins first. Competitor figures are approximate and marked “(as of 2026)”.
| Feature | Cart Line | Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Third-party / non-native payment penalty | No platform surcharge — local payments ARE the native rail, so there is no double-dip on top of the gateway. | Shopify Payments is unavailable in Pakistan, so merchants pay a third-party gateway 3-5% AND Shopify’s extra transaction fee of ~2% (Basic) / 1% (Grow) / 0.6% (Advanced) on top (as of 2026). |
| Local PK payment methods (JazzCash, EasyPaisa, Raast, wallets) | First-class and native — JazzCash, EasyPaisa, Raast and mobile wallets with no app bolt-on, matching how >60% of PK shoppers actually pay. | No native support; requires third-party gateways/apps (XPay, SafePay, bSecure, PayFast) plus integration work, even though >60% of PK shoppers prefer wallets over cards (as of 2026). |
| WhatsApp as a native commerce channel | WhatsApp AI + storefront is the core product — conversational catalog, checkout links and order updates are native and unified. | No native WhatsApp channel; needs third-party apps plus an approved WhatsApp BSP (Zoko, Interakt, BotSpace) with pre-approved templates and per-message costs (as of 2026). |
| Localization (FBR PRAL e-invoicing, khata/udhaar, provincial tax) | Ships FBR PRAL e-invoicing, khata/udhaar ledger and provincial sales-tax logic natively across the Cart Line / POS Line family. | Generic global tax engine; no native FBR PRAL integration, no khata/credit ledger and no PK provincial sales-tax logic — relies on apps or manual setup (as of 2026). |
| FX / currency conversion & repatriation | Settles natively in PKR via local rails, avoiding the FX conversion fee and USD-repatriation friction. | USD-billed with a ~1.5-2% currency conversion fee, plus State Bank FX controls and settlement delays on PK payouts (as of 2026). |
| Cash on Delivery (COD) handling | COD confirmation, OTP verification and abandoned-cart nudges happen in-channel on WhatsApp without paid apps — attacking the RTO margin killer directly. | Native Shopify lacks location-based COD restrictions, OTP/COD verification and RTO tooling; merchants buy third-party apps. RTO runs 25-40% on COD (as of 2026). |
| Hidden / total cost of ownership | Bundles WhatsApp, COD tooling and local payments natively, reducing the app-sprawl tax that inflates SMB bills. | Most merchants spend 50-100% above the base plan once apps are added — typically $70-250/mo for 5-15 apps (as of 2026). |
| Unified channel (chat + storefront + POS) | One unified channel — WhatsApp AI + storefront + POS Line share catalog, orders and customers out of the box. | Online store + POS unify under one admin, but the WhatsApp/conversational layer is external and not stitched into inventory/orders without apps (as of 2026). |
| Monthly platform cost (entry tier) | Transparent local pricing — see plans | Basic ~$39/mo annual (~$49 monthly); Grow ~$105; Advanced ~$399; Plus from ~$2,300/mo. The $5 Starter is social/chat-only, no full storefront (as of 2026). |
| Payment transaction fees (online cards) | Routes through PK-local rails (Raast near-zero; wallet/utility rails often cheaper than card interchange) — transparent local pricing, see plans. | Via Shopify Payments: ~2.9%+$0.30 (Basic) down to ~1.3-2.15%+$0.30 (Plus) — but Shopify Payments is not available in Pakistan, so PK merchants never get these rates (as of 2026). |
| Ease of setup / onboarding for PK SMBs | Tenant-cloning + WhatsApp-first onboarding lets a PK shopkeeper go live with local payments and chat without assembling a gateway + app + BSP stack. | Praised as easy globally, but PK merchants face extra setup: gateway approval, COD apps, WhatsApp BSP onboarding and USD-payout banking (as of 2026). |
| App ecosystem & extensibility | Bundles common SMB needs natively so apps are not required — but does not match a large third-party marketplace. | 17,600+ apps and a vast theme/dev ecosystem (as of 2026) — Shopify’s deepest moat and a genuine advantage. |
| Point of Sale (POS) | POS Line is integrated and tied to PK payments and FBR — strong on local compliance. | POS Lite free; POS Pro $89/mo per location; in-person ~2.4-2.6%+$0.10; hardware $49-$459. Mature, hardware-rich retail POS (as of 2026). |
| Scalability, global reach & brand trust | Regional depth for Pakistan — not built to chase global multi-market or enterprise scale. | Battle-tested at enterprise scale, multi-currency/multi-market, Shop Pay conversion lift (up to ~50%), strong SEO and social-commerce integration, established brand (as of 2026). |

Four things that don’t change no matter which Shopify plan you pick.
The double-dip you only discover after launch
Because Shopify Payments is not available in Pakistan, a PK merchant cannot use Shopify’s own checkout. You connect a third-party gateway (XPay, SafePay, bSecure, PayFast) and pay its 3-5% — and then Shopify charges its own extra transaction surcharge of about 2% (Basic), 1% (Grow) or 0.6% (Advanced) on top of that, just for not using a product you are not allowed to use (as of 2026).
Cart Line removes the surcharge entirely: local payments ARE the native rail, so there is nothing to penalise.
The cheap base plan is the smallest line on the bill
A $39/mo Basic plan reads cheap until you add the parts a PK store actually needs — a WhatsApp BSP app, a COD-verification app, a third-party gateway, and the ~1.5-2% USD currency conversion fee on every payout. Most merchants end up spending 50-100% above the base plan once 5-15 apps are added, roughly $70-250/mo extra (as of 2026).
Cart Line bundles WhatsApp, COD tooling and local payments natively, so the price you see is closer to the price you pay. Transparent local pricing — see plans.
WhatsApp is the channel, not an add-on
More than 60% of Pakistani online shoppers prefer chat and wallets over cards (as of 2026). On Shopify, selling on WhatsApp means a paid third-party app plus an approved BSP and template approvals. On Cart Line, WhatsApp AI + storefront is the product: a conversational catalog, checkout links and order updates all flow through the channel your buyers already live in.
One unified channel — WhatsApp AI + storefront + POS Line — sharing the same catalog, orders and customers.
COD and RTO are first-class problems, not afterthoughts
Cash on Delivery is dominant in Pakistan and carries a 25-40% return-to-origin rate (as of 2026) — the single biggest margin killer for PK e-commerce. Native Shopify lacks COD location restrictions, OTP/COD verification and RTO tooling, pushing merchants to paid apps. Cart Line confirms COD orders, runs OTP checks and fires abandoned-cart nudges in-channel on WhatsApp, where the buyer can reply instantly.
Plus native FBR PRAL e-invoicing, khata/udhaar and provincial sales tax — localization Shopify simply does not ship for Pakistan.
Where Shopify still wins.
We are not going to pretend these away. If they describe your business more than the Pakistan-specific pain above, Shopify may be the right call — and we would rather you know that now.
App ecosystem and extensibility
Shopify’s 17,600+ apps and vast theme/developer ecosystem (as of 2026) are a real moat. If you need a niche integration, it almost certainly already exists. A young platform like Cart Line cannot match that breadth — our counter is bundling the common SMB needs natively so you need fewer apps, not pretending the marketplace gap does not exist.
Global scale, multi-market and brand trust
Shopify is battle-tested at enterprise scale with global infrastructure, multi-currency and multi-market selling, accelerated checkout (Shop Pay’s conversion lift up to ~50%), strong SEO, deep TikTok/Instagram/Meta social-commerce integration and an established brand (as of 2026). If you are selling across borders at scale, that maturity is a genuine advantage. Cart Line’s edge is regional depth for Pakistan — not global breadth.
Checkout maturity and analytics
Shopify’s web checkout is more optimized and more proven, with accelerated checkouts, mature funnel analytics and fraud tooling (as of 2026). Cart Line counters with conversational checkout inside WhatsApp, where PK buyers already are — but we are honest that we do not yet match Shopify’s deep funnel analytics or its accelerated-checkout track record.
The questions PK merchants ask first.
Shopify Payments is not available in Pakistan, so merchants must use a third-party gateway and pay its 3-5% fee AND Shopify’s extra transaction surcharge of about 2% (Basic), 1% (Grow) or 0.6% (Advanced) on top (as of 2026). Billing is also in USD with a ~1.5-2% currency conversion fee. Cart Line uses Pakistan-local rails as the native rail, so there is no platform surcharge for using local payments.
Yes. Pakistan-local payment methods (JazzCash, EasyPaisa, Raast and mobile wallets) are first-class in Cart Line — no third-party app to bolt on and no platform surcharge. More than 60% of Pakistani online shoppers prefer mobile wallets over cards (as of 2026).
Yes. COD is dominant in Pakistan with a 25-40% return-to-origin (RTO) rate (as of 2026). Cart Line’s WhatsApp-native flow lets you confirm COD orders and run OTP verification and abandoned-cart nudges in-channel, without buying separate paid apps the way Shopify merchants typically must.
Shopify wins on ecosystem depth (17,600+ apps as of 2026), global scale and multi-market selling, accelerated checkout (Shop Pay’s conversion lift), and brand recognition. Cart Line’s edge is regional depth — local payments, PKR settlement, WhatsApp-native commerce, and FBR + khata — not global breadth.
Stop paying twice. Sell on the rails Pakistan already uses.
Launch a WhatsApp-native store with JazzCash, EasyPaisa and Raast built in — no platform surcharge, PKR settlement, FBR and khata on day one.
No Shopify-style third-party surcharge on local payments.
